Welcome to the new year, folks! I thought I'd start off the new year with something subtle and understated. So, yeah, Dhur's dead β or is he? Bwa Ha ha ha!
So, it looks like Wizards of the Coast has decided to start work on Dungeons & Dragons 5th edition, and will supposedly be using player feedback in playtests to refine the game. I hope they do a good job on it, because, although I play 4th edition and like it (for the most part), I do wish the game were simpler: as it stands now, it is more of a tactical game versus a role-playing game. Making a character for the game is more of an exercise in mathematics than cooperative stroytelling, and me am not good at the math thing. :)
To find out more about what WotC has in mind, go take a look at their official press release.
Hasta,
~Rob

Nah…. He’s probably just been teleported somewhere else. Separating Dhur from his adult supervision will definitely turn out to be a tactically unsound mistake.
Welcome back BTW.
I am looking forward to seeing what WOTC does with 5th edition. I do not like 4th edition. I hope they go back closer to the original AD&D where it was more about basic stats and you fill in the blanks with your imagination, of course that may be asking to much for a lot of “gamers” nowadays.
My oldest is very concerned for Duhr. Good job developing a character that engenders so much love and admiration from his audience π
And I’ve started making up some RPG games based on the old AD&D format, and I rely HEAVILY on character development. Good family fun playing “Hillybilly Hell” lol A game we are making up together in a what-if slightly futuristic society after the nation fail and cities wall up and throw their troublemakers outside of the walls in lieu of having to have prisons and such. We are having so much fun basing it on a place we both know in Oregon. π
1) Welcome back.
2) What happened with the cracked tooth?
3) Yes separating Dhur from the “supervision” is a very bad idea.
4) as to WotC and its 5th edition they had better do more than just accept player feedback,..they had better actually send designers to gaming shops all over the US for week long “fact finding missions” and such,..take maybe all this year doing nothing but traveling the US talking to gamers. Then maybe we can get a workable and balanced game out of them,…MAYBE
@FSilvermane:
1) Thanks!
2) Still cracked, but the pain has lessened to the point where all my wife needs to do (at present) is to chew on the opposite side. Still don’t know when we’ll get it fixed, as the employer who provided us with dental insurance decided not to renew it this year. π
3) True, but Dhur may end up surprising you all. Maybe. π
4) Agreed, but that’s unlikely to happen outside the confines of the greater Seattle area. My main complaint has been that 4th edition is too complicated. As both a player and DM (usually DM), I find myself having difficulty keeping track of all the powers, items, feats, etc. that my characters/monsters have at their disposal and something inevitably gets missed. In order to play, you need to take up a great deal of table real estate to lay out power cards, books, dice and (if you’re lucky) your character sheet. I am SO starting to lean towards Pathfinder as a viable option.
@MamaShaggy: Sorry about fretting your oldest, but I’m glad folks like the big ol’ oaf enough to wonder if he’s dead or not. Stay tuned!
@Fistendel: Welcome aboard, and I agree with you. From your lips to God’s ears, as the saying goes.
@Infamous Nefarious: Yeah, you keep on believing that. π
Theyre already working on the 5th edition!? The 4th isn’t even a decade old. Poor Dhur, hope it’s nothing too bad.
5th Edition??? Dungeons and Dragons is turning into a new Magic for WOTC. What’s next, tournament D&D? Come on Wizards, wise up and realize that the heart of a good RPG is the storytelling, not the dice, not the lists, and not even the rules when it comes down to it. I’ve bent the rules to fit the adventure I don’t know how many times as a DM (both for and against my players) and it always worked.
If you haven’t tried it yet, there is a great independent system that’s pay-what-you-can called Legend (http://www.ruleofcool.com/). you should check it out. All proceeds go to the charity Child’s Play. you can download the rulebook from there.
5th Edition? Bah! 4th Edition is, as stated previously, a table top strategy game, 3rd Edition is overly complex with its Feats and Special Abilities. However of the 2 I prefer 3rd as it’s actually more flexible and easier to run with than AD&D (insofar as designing monsters, etc, not neccessarily game play!). In truth tho i’m disillusioned with WOTC and am starting a Savage Worlds campaign. Fast, Furious, Fun. π
Back to Dhur, I vote Teleported! lol.
Only 1st edition exists in this house! (^_^)
Rob – you should definitely check out Pathfinder. It’s what I switched to after D&D went to 4th edition; it’s like D&D 3.5 on steroids!
I made the switch to Pathfinder because I grew tired of the constant updates & revisions D&D was going through, as well as the financial commitment it would take to keep up with them. I’ve recently joined a D&D 4th edition game, though, and while I’m enjoying it, I find it humorous that within a month of beginning 4th edition, D&D is updating to 5th edition! Here we go again!
Also on the Pathfinder side, I like the publisher (Paizo) and its approach to their game. They had open playtests and are very customer-friendly. Sounds like that’s what WotC is trying to do; interesting …..
I have never surrendered my loyalty to First Edition AD&D. That being said, I’ll play whatever game is running. None of my circle made the leap to 4 ed, though various D20 games are ongoing, including Pathfinder, Stargate, Modern, and some 3.5 here and there. Whenever we need some gaming “comfort food” for the soul, we slip back to our House Rules version of AD&D, mostly 1st Ed Unearthed Arcana with some 2nd Ed for seasoning. Some of our most memorable moments came from Iron Crown games though, especially Space Master.
