Wow. Look at that. This is cartoon #299. How time flies...
More on this whole D&D 5th Edition thing: There were some interesting things brought into 4th edition that I hope make it to 5th edition unscathed. The shortened skill list was a blessing from on high compared to the mess that 3.0 and 3.5 gave us, but if there is anything that both my players and myself hate with the passion of a thousand dying suns, it's Skill Challenges. I have yet to find even one vaguely interesting and seems almost tacked on to ensure that the game doesn't devolve into nothing but hack-n-slash. The idea of clerics having more to do than heal people up and put the smack down on ONE creature type (undead) was awesome, as was the broadened class options, like the avenger, warlord, etc. I could ramble on and on about this, and probably will in the weeks and months to come. I will say this: Unless the new system is so AMAZINGLY fun and easy to run, I'll probably stay with 4th Eidtion. I've already changed game systems on my group ( 3.5 to 4) and if I were to try it again, I'd probably be looking at a mutiny. :)
Unless, y'know, the new system is REALLY cool ;)
Hasta,

Gooooo back to 3.5,…beware,..beware,… 4th edition is not the way,…gooooo back the way you came,…. go no further for 4th Edition will ead you to certain destruction,……
Sorry had to say it,..and had to make the obscure movie reference,…. but seriously 4th edition soured me from looking for games,…. I despise 4th Ed,…. i tried 3 different groups and the play was just not up to the old days of sitting around the table with munchies and drinks of varied sorts having fun [this would be 2nd Ed and 3-3.5 Ed timeframe],..it lagged,..it became stale,…no heroics just rote power recitation,….
I have seen good and bad from both I hope ten brings back what 3 had that four lacked and picks up the few (and far between) things 4th edition added. I’ve had games devolve with both editions to sitting around eating chips so I can’t say either have reached 100% sucess
I agree that some of the skills from 3.5 could do with a nice bit of merging. Also clerics that take certain domains can turn other types of creatures so they don’t always do just undead.
I just hope that 5th doesn’t purely rely on the internet because would just hate that. I find paper character sheets a load more portable.
Dang. As someone who started playing and DMing when the choices were Basic D&D and Advanced D&D (slightly after Original D&D), I’m a little lost with all the subsequent editions. We used to add classes to our game from sources like Dragon Magazine (in print). I had an illusionist and a psi in a game a friend ran once upon a time.
I feel old.
High kick, foot in mouth…
