I have some news; some good, some bad.
The Good News: After over 8 years of unemployment, where I was attempting to make a living as a cartoonist, I have taken a job with FEMA, helping survivors of Hurricanes Harvey and Irma.
The Bad News: Due to the nature of FEMA deployment, I will be working 7 days a week for the foreseeable future, working 10 hours days. Added to that the 1 hour commute on both ends and I will barely have time to sleep, let alone draw and post new MeatShield comics.
What all this adds up to is I need to put MeatShield on hold until roughly January 20, 2018, which is currently the end of my deployment. I apologize to all of you, Patrons and non-Patrons alike, but doing this is the best thing for both my family and the survivors I will be helping.
Thank you all for reading and being there for me. I hope to see you all in about 4 months or so.
Take care.
~Rob

Good on you. That sounds intense, but it’s good work. Good luck!
It’s cool, comics can wait for the important stuff π
Aw, man. But, you’re going away to do good, so I guess I can’t really complain. Here’s one who will be waiting with baited breath for Dhur and the gang to return! (and to see if Philo ever makes it back) π Good luck, and God bless!
Fight the good fight!
Good luck with FEMA. We’ll be looking forward to your return! ^_~
Yay, and also darn, and also yay!
Will miss the comic, but helping the survivors with FEMA is far more important work right now.
Awake at 3am, cross country commute (no I’m not exaggerating), 5 day a week deployment, 14 hour days, i sleep when i can (usually in transit, it’s 4 hour commute) and barely see my family.
So yes, i know how you feel………..
In this sort of FUBAR global economy, earning cold hard cash takes much precedence over a simple thing like a webcomic……..
We can wait, take your time and be careful out there……..
I got back from those SAD missions not long ago. At this stage it’s mostly cleanup and rebuilding. Lots of food and water distribution as well.
If it’s a sacrifice I can make for national community service, I guess I can wait.
And BTW, Good Job! I respect what you are doing and hope you help lots of people!
Congratulations on the Job! And I think people missed how big this reveal was. I could have sworn only Bekkena was able to hear the hammer before, yes?
@Robert Mitchell: I was wondering if anyone was going to notice that. π Evil DM laugh – Heh heh heh.
Best reason for a webcomic hiatus I’ve ever seen. Take care, and we’ll look forward to your return.
Ooh, thought I caught this one; back in this comic (http://www.meatshield.net/archive/607-how-have-they-managed-without-one-this-long/ ) the new guy says that he’s “only 78”, which is supposedly practically a teenager; how did he drop 28 years in between then and now?
@Keishdante I’ll tell you how… I forgot. π Rest assured, a MeatShield No-Prize is on its way to you. π
I would just like to wish you and your family a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. I hope you get to enjoy some time with your family.
@Jeff – To you and yours as well!
