574 – Jaine and Philo, sittin’ in a tree….

I thought about having Ch'p say "Word" to Dhur in that last panel, but I decided that a) I didn't need it and b) It would show my age. Like I did just now, home skillet. :)

I ran a bit behind this week, so this week will be a one-strip week. Next week, we'll be back to the regular schedule.

I have a favor to ask of you all: if you use AdBlocker as part of your regular internet use, please whitelist meatshield.net. Right now, MeatShield is (barely) staying afloat fiscally mostly due to the kind contributions of my Patreon patrons. Before Patreon, the only ways I made any money with the strip were via book sales and ad revenue. Then AdBlocker reared its head. I use AdBlocker, as do many of you, and I have no problem with it. However, when folks started using it, I saw what little money I made via ads shrink to nearly nothing. As Dhur would say, "C'mon, help a dude out, y'know?"

Thanks,

~Rob

    1. @Hstaphath: Thanks!:) I hope I didn’t come across too cranky or anything; it just finally dawned on me that I had never asked for Meatshield.net to be whitelisted and that it might be a good idea.

  1. Ads never bothered me that much, unless they have audio that interferes with what I’m listening to, or eat up bandwidth, or cover up the webcomic I’m trying to read…

But if I ever do install AdBlocker, I’ll be sure to disable it for sites like this one!

  2. Oh shoot. Thanks for the reminder on Adblock. You are on the whitelist and I’m going back through the other comics and blogs I read to whitelist them.

  3. Adblock Latitude (I use PaleMoon b/c of what Mozilla did to Brendan Eich; if the Brave browser comes to PCLOS, I may use that instead) has now whitelisted Meatshield.

I’ve had ads seriously misbehave on a couple of sites, and had to adblock them as a result. I’ll be sure to let you know if that happens here.

  4. I haven’t got around to doing it, but yeah, I have some sites I just don’t go to any more because of misbehaving ads of various types, and probably will knuckle under and get it soon.

The advertising business has been up in arms a lot about adblockers in the past year or so, but adblockers have been around for over a decade. This whole brouhaha about everyone using adblockers all seems to have arisen about the same time I noticed the biggest upswing in frequency of misbehaving ads since browsers started having inbuilt popup blockers. Somehow, I don’t think it’s a coincidence that there was a big upswing in adblocker use at the same time that we had a big upswing in the chance of coming across obnoxious ads.

Personally, I like banner ads. They’re fairly unobtrusive, usually take relatively few resources by current internet standards, and every so often they’re something I’m interested enough in to check out (there have been quite a few things I would have missed out on if I hadn’t clicked on a banner ad). When you start getting things like autoplaying video, especially with sound, though… No. Just… no.

(For anyone reading this considering whitelisting, I can verify that I’ve never seen anything on this site that I consider obnoxious.)

  5. Already had the site on the permission list. I mainly use it on sites that have a reputation for not filtering out bad ads such as popups that block the content, play audio automatically, or do drive-by downloads of adware/viruses.
