332 – Awkward Formal Dinners

UPDATE โ€“ 4/10/12: Quick Poll: Do you think the party needs a fifth member? If so, what kind?

Kind of like Awkward Family Photos… except not.

Nothing pith to say today, folks, still recovering from my kids’ spring break ๐Ÿ™‚

See you all Wednesday (or thereabouts),

Oh for the love of all that is good and pure,… its Holiday dinner at my house,…. Someone trying to make the occasion all formal [usually my Grandmother],..another questioning some comment someone made earlier [usually one of my cousins,…which usually leads to all kinds of fireworks],..and someone off to the side who is completely oblivious to the ensuing mayhem [that was usually my Aunt Holly who would be talking to me about some alternate lifestyle thing or obscure historical thing that happened or came up at the Collage she worked at,…geez I miss those conversations with her]

Mike Lewis on April 9, 2012 @ 9:40 pm

I think Becky is having a wonderful time playing boy-brain-ball. Or she really is oblivious to Ch’p’s feelings towards her. I am assuming its the brain ball.

umm. your link thinks its an internal link not an external link. ๐Ÿ™‚ it’s directing to the meatshield.com address. ๐Ÿ™‚

I think a fifth character would be pretty cool, round out the party. It should be something really out there though, not a standard archetype. Maybe a psionic character, or an artificer, though I suppose the team is lacking any sort of divine spell caster so maybe a cleric or paladin is in order. I realize that I gave four different ideas and was totally unhelpful, so I’m just going to say artificer (or at least a cleric who’s also a blacksmith).

Dragonborn Sorcerer on April 10, 2012 @ 1:52 pm

the team is quite mele focused right now, half ork barbarian, dwarf fighter, halfling monk jaine isn’t as totally mele focused, but I would say either a ranger (as in person who uses bow, not the favored enemy type although the two can overlap…) or a primary caster, and either human or elf, but if they’ll be a flat 2d character, don’t bother adding them. then again I know your writing, you don’t do 2d characters.

Spammy the Wonder Mule on April 10, 2012 @ 8:32 pm

Whyโ€ฆ Howโ€ฆ Vorpal is the fifth member!

Ok, I like the current party dynamic but have no problem with a fifth member. Something non-standard would be nice depending on how it would mess with the world. Minotaur archer, kobold sorcerer, harpy something or otherโ€ฆ

FSilvermane on April 10, 2012 @ 9:47 pm

Im ok with a 5th member,… but agree with Spammy that Vorpal should count as a member so it would really be a 6th member. If you do go the added member route run with it if at all possible,… an out there non-standard type,.. maybe a spell slinger who REALLY enjoys garish magic,… the kind who throws an AoE spell at a single target because its big and showy,..or whose Magic Missile spell is big chromatic spheres that give off sparks,… showy spells but not a rude self important person,…

Jordan on April 11, 2012 @ 12:23 am

You just added Vorpal. At least let him/her/it have some more time to shake up the current party dynamic.

okiegoddess on April 11, 2012 @ 7:43 am

Okay, I must be obsessive. I just discovered this strip less than a week ago and I’ve already caught up to the current one. That or I read fast! I love this!! It reminds me of my old gaming group and our adventures. I’ve moved and haven’t found a new one yet. I miss gaming. Keep up the good work, Rob!

methardin on April 11, 2012 @ 8:05 am

Speaking of Vorpal, where is she and how are the Elves handling her? Also, didn’t I see those chairs on some infomercial?

Rob on April 11, 2012 @ 8:54 am

@okiegoddess: Thanks! Glad you like the strip, I work hard on it. ๐Ÿ™‚ If you need to find a gaming group and aren’t sure where to start looking, try looking on Pen and Paper Games’ Member Registry or at EN World’s Gamers Seeking Gamers page. I believe both require registration, but otherwise are free. Roll those crits!

@Jordan, FSilvermane, Methardin, Spammy, et al: Vorpal is still there and we will be seeing more of her soon, but as far as a new party member, I pretty much meant one that has opposable thumbs. ๐Ÿ˜‰ Vorpal’s kind of like an honorary member or whatever.

Here’s a little behind the GM screen moment for you, though: did you know that Ch’p started off life (in my head anyway) as a not-terribly competent and near-sighted mage whose favorite spell was fireball? He also wasn’t named Ch’p (can’t remember what it was), but it wasn’t anywhere near as punny. I then realized that the whole near-sighted thing was good for maybe two jokes and after that it would have been like watching Mr. Magoo (kids, ask your parents), where maybe the first vision-impaired joke would be funny, but would then quickly get tiresome and boring.

Rob on April 11, 2012 @ 8:58 am

@Lord Damian: which link?

Susie Schroeder on April 11, 2012 @ 11:53 am

I’d like a Paladin or a Sorcerer.myself. I always play one or the other

Spammy the Wonder Mule on April 11, 2012 @ 12:51 pm

Heh, I was trying to be funny when I threw that comment about Vorpal in. I do like Vorpal but who knew that the little c-hound was so loved?

Dragonborn Sorcerer on April 11, 2012 @ 1:27 pm

the broken link is the Kind of like Awkward Family Photos… one.

Spammy the Wonder Mule on April 11, 2012 @ 1:33 pm

Quick, messy way to go to that site. Click the link, strip out everything in the url but awkwardfamilyphotos.com and reloadโ€ฆ Or type in awkwardfamilyphotos.com and go there directly.

Grimlock13 on April 11, 2012 @ 5:34 pm

Maybe a priest of the goddess(or god) of luck and chance. The kind of guy who would try something just to test is luck. Faithful in is goddess(and in is luck) but not very wise.

Lord Damian on April 11, 2012 @ 6:56 pm

yea, what dragonborn said, the awkward vamily photos link. ๐Ÿ™‚

@Spammy. i wasn’t whining about it, i’m just OCD enough that it’d bug me if it was my page, so i thought i’d speak up. ๐Ÿ™‚

shadrach95 on April 11, 2012 @ 7:32 pm

Look, what you need in your party is a regular, normal human. You know, one from our world. He or she should show up — be confused — and in the end make all the difference in the world. Slow, difficult, and rewarding. Trust me, this will make it all work.

Rob on April 11, 2012 @ 7:44 pm

@Lord Damian, et al: OK, I got it fixed, thanks ๐Ÿ™‚

Aaron on August 8, 2012 @ 11:31 am

How about a pixie or fairy of some sort? One who is sick to death of tinkerbell prejudices and wants to kick ass and take names. Being 6 inches tall and a mage shouldn’t interfere with that, right?
(Note, one of her first spells is enlarge, which to her annoyance makes her 12 inches tall…)
