Ranks in the Heal skill? Was friends with a necromancer back in the day? Or, simply, he’s a worlds-class artificer — it pays to know what materials you have on hand to work your magic with at any given time. Blood has lots of iron, water, and proteins to work with!
… Chances are, though, he learned it from a mystery novel. Writers have to research a LOT of things that could be taken as suspect at first glance. (Source: am a writer. :B)
