596 – You get an “A” for effort, Dhur

Winning streaks don't last forever, Dhur. :)

I have decided that MeatShield needs to go back to a weekly schedule, effective today. There's an old saying: "First you get good, then you get fast, then you get good and fast." I'm working on the fast part.

In other geeky news, I'm going to get to play D&D again! I usually DM and my esteemed brother-in-law is going to be running Curse of Strahd, just in time for October. I usually play oddball characters with personalities based off of TV characters. I once had a 2nd Ed. psionicist named Rasag the Incredulous whose personality was based on Ed Chigliak from Northern Exposure - kids ask your parents. Recently, I ran an Oath of Vengance Paladin whose personality was based loosely on Matthew McConaghey. This time around, I'll be playing a straight-up wizard, something I've surprisingly never run before, personality yet to be determined. He's going to be more like a detective than the typical wizard. Looking forward to it!

See you next week!

  1. Ah, a Forensic Wizard, one of my favorite archetypes, ever since Sean O’Lochlain in Randall Garrett’s “Lord D’Arcy” stories.

If this is 5th Ed you’ll be playing in, I recommend Investigation (of course!), Perception, and Insight. Plus appropriate investigative spells.

  2. @SGT Lewis
Just because he can read what the texts say now, doesn’t mean he’ll find them at all interesting. I’d expect the library to mostly contain metaphysical theory texts and philosophy treatises. Does Dhur strike you as the kind of guy who enjoys reading that kind of stuff?
Now if the monastery also had a subscription to Barbarian Illustrated, including the annual Woman’s Chainmail Issue, then you’d be right.

  3. …And since we’re talking about the W’Shaa, they’d probably have shelf after shelf of cookbooks, but I don’t think that would grab Dhur’s attention much either.

  4. I was involved in a Star Wars DnD-style game we ran through a group skype chat for the better part of a year before OOC personality issues forced our GM to shut it down- I ran with a Scoundrel (related to a Rogue, I think) character based off the pilot ‘Wash’ from the TV show Firefly…tons of fun….Good luck, Sir!

  5. Even before I saw Foradain’s comment, I was going to suggest a personality like Lord Darcy for your wizard, though yes, Sean was the actual wizard. Or if you want more modern, there’s always Harry Dresden. Better connection to fireball spells, though working Darcy’s personality into your own campaign could be more interesting.

  6. Ugh. You’re still messing around with that 4e and 5e ND&D (NOT Dungeons & Dragons) junk? You need to get back to some real D&D (1e to 3.5e).

  7. @Janessa R:

If you’re thinking 5e is more like 4e than it is like (insert favorite version here), I recommend taking another look.

Personally, I’d put 5e as slightly back towards 2e from 3e or 3.5e.

  8. As for the getting it back on a weekly schedule again, here’s an idea; instead of taking a month off again at some point, you could just take a week every month or so, just so there isn’t so large a gap? I miss this comic when it’s not updating… 🙁

  9. Just be mindful with a more modern one like dresden you avoid his luck. Seriously, poor guy gets all the whammies. But have fun with the wizard!

  10. @Stratovarian That’s mainly Butcher apparently feeling the need to 1) crank up the power level from before (or weigh the character down with major handicaps he didn’t have before), and 2) making each story a constant race against the clock once things ramp up so that even getting sleep after 24 hours is a big deal (slight exaggeration there).
