Annnnnd.... we're back! Sorry for the lengthy hiatus, folks, but no more of that! As of this week, we will be back to three times a week! Woo Hoo!
So, now you know exactly what Philonoth Rhieune is: a changeling artificer. For those of you who haven't played D&D in the past 10 years or so, the artificer is sort of a magical MacGyver; they don't actually cast spells, but equip them with a rubber band, some sovereign glue and a Swiss Army Knife and watch out! Artificers have a kind of steampunk/mad scientist bent to them and one of the things they excel at is making magic items, both temporary ones by using infusions, and permanent ones. See you all Wednesday!

Welcome back!
Whoa, artificers have a Wikipedia page!
So, we have a changeling artificer, added to our barbarian, bard, monk, and paladin. That’s one defender (Becky), two leaders (Jaine and Philo), and two strikers (Dhur and Ch’p). No controllers, but if enough of the party have the odd area attack, you can get by without a controller, and both bards and artificers tend to have those, depending on which rules set you’re using.
I’d sit down at a RPGA table with these guys. In fact, I call dibs on that last seat ^_^
Buzz saw armor is handy stuff on the battle field as well as lumber yards. Lumberjacks may have used the stuff first for work. Later it came into use on the field of battle when some lumberjacks came to the rescue of an armored coach, beset by goblin raiders.
Random thought.
Will we ever have a story arc on where Blue gets his stuff? I seem to remember that there was a strip where Drunk Dhur asks, “WHERE FOR YOU GET THIS STUFF?” (don’t remember exact text) “IT’S NOT ILLEGAL, IS IT?” and Blue goes, “No… heh heh.”
I mean… I think Jaine called attention to a mithril battleaxe? For what, 2 gold? There’s gotta be an adventure in there somewhere.
@Calvin I wondered why no one at all remarked on that particular strip; I guess I was too subtle. That wasn’t Dhur asking if that merchandise was illegal, that was Blue asking his seller, who we have also met a really long time ago. Here’s a hint: Sandwiches. 🙂
*after a dive into The Archives, to recall exactly what Rob was referring to*
Fortunately for Blue, all of that particular batch of gear got recovered by Dhur before Carl could sell it to him. It would’ve been embarrassing if Dhur had found his stuff for sale at Blue’s.
Ooh, an Artificer.
Will Philo be getting a Cast Page?
Will.the Hammer, for that matter?
Oh god! It’s Carl Bitterore! He supplies Blue??? Good grief.
I’m not surprised no one figured that out, either; Dhur and Blue have similar speech bubbles, ESPECIALLY when Dhur’s really drunk. I think. Well, they have identically bad grammar in any case.
For those of you who haven’t played D&D in the past 10 years . . .
Teaching the kids 1E in this house! (^_^)
These artificers appear to be an amalgam of the Chivalry and Sorcery Mechanician Artificer without the fighting skills and with the Weaponsmith’s ability to make weapons and armor, the Jewelsmith’s making of Rings of Power, and a subset of the Alchemist’s skills.
I wouldn’t be sure about the lack of fighting skills. Conventional fighting with swords and such, or unarmed like the cookie monks, may not be his shtick, but give him a crossbow or a bandolier of alchemist’s [insert random damage type name here] flasks, and I’ll bet Philo can wreak a bit of havoc.
