400 – Divine Intervention

"So, what did you do yesterday?"
"Not much. Went to the store, got some spaghetti and meatballs for dinner. You?"
"Oh, you know, the usual: watched royalty get stabbed, then had a conversation with my god. No biggie."

Heck, the last time we hit a hundredth strip, Dhur died. Had to do something equally earthshaking, no?

Well, after years of running D&D games, I am now about to jump into the world of Pathfinder. Partly because the current iteration of D&D seems like too much work for too little fun and after discussing it with my players, we all realized that we actually had more fun and more "No kidding, there I was in a game" stories when I was running 3.5 versus 4.0. After reading up on the game system, it seems like a lot of fun. I'll keep you all posted.

Take care,

~Rob

UPDATE - 1/15/13

I love getting comments on the strip, especially when those comments make me stretch and grow as a cartoonist. I received a comment on this particular strip that neatly hit a key plot point that no one thus far has picked up on, but the comment poster used an email address that read "notarealemailsorry{at}ohwell{dot}net", which is not a real website and/or email provider. So, long story short, if you want to post a comment, please use a real email address. I had to trash that comment because of this. If you're concerned about your privacy, don't be: I don't gather email addresses and sell them or anything. I wouldn't know how. Seriously, if you knew how limited my computer skills are, you would kick yourself for ever being concerned about that. :) So, just use your real email address and as long as it's not vulgar or trolling, I'll put it up on the site ( all first-time commenters have to be approved by me before their comments go live). Thanks.

  1. So, first, I was just going to say that Day’l was feeling stabby (a quote that will be lost on most), but then:
    Deus ex Machina!

  2. Now, was the Nailmoor Sledge taken just in time to abort the ritual, or did the ritual have to be complete in order for it to be taken? I expect we’ll find out once the discussion is over ^_^

  3. A verbal chewing by ones god.. never a good thing. *grins* Patherfinder looked good, thanks for the tip, and yes 3.5 is the best incarnation of D&D ever. Got 5 different versions of D&D, from the white box up to 3.5, flipped through 4.0 n didn’t like what I saw at all. Thanks again for putting me on the track of pathfinder! *grins eeevily*

  4. 1st – I love reading this comic strip! Great balance between humor and solid plot.

2nd – I knew Jonus was coming back! I just knew it!

3rd – Congrats on joining the ranks of those of us who chose Pathfinder over D&D! In my opinion, Pathfinder is the next logical evolutionary step from D&D 3.5. 4.0 is OK, at best, but sometimes it has a “D&D superheroes” feel to it. Pathfinder feels like the D&D I’ve always played … only better!

  5. Hey atleast Becky is not like my old Character [a Half Elf Preist] who used to argue with his God [God of Traveling/Travelers/Pathways] all the time. His God would argue back [it was a very small Church of maybe a dozen priests so the God had alot of time on his hands] and occasionally zap my character with lightning [or those nearby if they interrupted the argument] or do other such “annoyed God things”. Eventually my Character’s name was changed from Orthal Silvermane to Kaboom Kablamis due to the extreme amount of time he was blown up/zapped/smote/etc by his God and survived [his God would always take all but a few HP with the blast and then heal him back to full health].

  6. This god stepping up to converse with Becky reminds me of the Exterminat Us Now comic. Where one of the Gods took time to edit his holy book and get a zelot to stop his anti-role playing game campaign.

  7. Ooh boy… Well, at least this paticular god freezes time, unlike poor old Morts God, Who croped up out ofbthe blue and ordered Mort to the back of the party (Mort was a Fighter) that he might speak without The Monks Offending Presence.

  8. Good move. The current pathfinder is what 4th edition should have been. 4e was an idea that should have never made it past the concept stage. I think you will have a far more enjoyable gaming experience with Pathfinder.

  9. Eh, if a step backward makes the game more fun for you, have at ‘er. It’s never the rules that made the story anyway, just how easily people forget there are rules when they’re creating that story.

  10. I agree that Pathfinder flows better than D&D4th ED. I have played both and really felt bogged down by 4th ed. I had almost gotten to the point of stepping backward and looking for a 3rd ed game until someone mentioned Pathfinder to me,…. it seemed a good system,..I played it and enjoyed it. Admittedly its similar to 3rd ed but with some more tweaks to it.

  11. 4E isn’t bad, per se. It’s just that it’s aimed at people new to the hobby, not at the people who’ve played 3E since it was released… while Pathfinder is aimed at that audience.

  12. I switched to a small press game back around the time AD&D went 2nd Ed. It’s all about playing a game where the rules don’t get in the way of the fun.

  13. Good move to Pathfinder. My thoughts on 4E… well, we gotta keep this PG, so… someone was WotC saw the enormous sales of the D&D miniatures game that thought, “Wow people like this game” so they made the 4E based on the mini’s game, and not the ROLEplaying game. Sorry WotC, people were buying the pre painted figs for use in the roleplaying game, not the mini’s game. There I kept it PG.
