Dhur: Half-orc Barbarian or Poster Child for ADHD? You make the call.

__

I was listening to the D&D Podcast from Wizards of the Coast today and they were talking about D&D Next ( which is what they're calling the playtest for the new D&D rules set) in the first half of the show. Turns out I wasn't the only one who thought the healing mechanics stunk - a LOT of people complained about it. They said that they will have the next batch of playtest rules available in time for GenCon, which runs from August 16 - 19, and have them available for the general public to download sometime thereafter. Hopefully, they will get their online distribution cleared up, as it was very difficult to get the playtest files last time.

See you all Friday (or thereabouts)

  1. Eh, I still preffer the idea of healer specific classes – Or at least, classes able to heal as a main class feature. But Im a 3.5 player, so i guess its just gonna be that was for me.

  2. The only reason D’hur’s not a poster child for ADHD is because nobody would EVER want him on a poster for anything.

I haven’t played Next yet, so Rob’s commentary is all I have to go on (so it’s gospel, natch). But it seems as though Next is wanting to give healers a bit more of a prominent role, if you basically NEED a healer in order to go out and bashy-bashy. I can see the temptation to sort of force the cooperation hand, and give a nod to the most underrated class next to bards, but no class should me exclusively required. That would be like saying only “Fighters” can wield a weapon, or only wizards can cast or use potions. The point to making a class useful is a) enhancing abilities to where the class is DESIRED for their specialty, not required, and b) finding a DM (or GM or whatever they’re called now) who will provide that class the opportunity to use those specialties creatively, tossing a bone to non-fighter classes instead of just doing the standard hack-n-slash dungeon crawl.

    Just my two coppers worth.

  3. First point is Dhur is in charge of the group, kind of like a Captain of a squad while Jaine is more of the Sargent. The Captain is in charge of “big picture stuff” and the Sargent is in charge of day to day stuff,…further the Sargent filters the Captains orders down to the rest of the squad with a combination of common sense, small misunderstanding, creative interpretation, and sometimes outright contradiction so that the day to day stuff works. So yeah officially Dhur [like the Captain] is in charge, but Jaine ]like the Sargent] actually runs things,……lol.

Second as a player starting with AD&D I have always liked and used the idea of a separation of roles without a locking of roles. Clerics are USUALLY healers since they have the divine spells to heal with, but a Ranger or a Druid can heal too since they have knowledge of natural remedies and a Paladin can heal due to their divine spells. In our old game our healer was the Druid [DM changed things slightly to allow the Druid some healing spells that “assisted” her herbal stuff] and our front line were a Fighter and a Cleric of Battle [I so enjoyed specialty clerics]. Admittedly our Cleric did have healing spells too but his main focus was offensive spells. Maybe this is what WotC should go back to, the idea of having 1-2classes each that are role specific [healer, damage dealer, etc] and a few that have utility to pull from multiple roles. I think having a Druid [or any divine caster] that can give up some of their offensive spells for healing works well.

  4. I figured that, but the placement of his hand matches with the lower curve of her breast so it looks like he’s supporting it. I know he isn’t, but it looks like one of those OMG surprise moments in some comdies. Just before the poor guy gets smacked into next week. ๐Ÿ™‚ ๐Ÿ˜€

  5. Ahhh we all know our esteemed artist does not do such things,..this is a PG strip with an occasional PG13 in there [Dwarf girl in a nighties is kinda risque’,…lol],……

  6. Feature really needed: Edit posts…..

I’m used to blogs where I can post, read, then edit my typo’s…

    “be” should have been “me”
