173 – Boot to the door!

I run a  weekly D&D game (surprise surprise) and it's become almost a foregone conclusion that whatever door they come to, be it the sanctum of an evil wizard or a storage closet, every single door will be kicked down. Even though there are not one but TWO characters in the party that have very high ranks in Perception and could easily listen through the door to determine what is inside, enabling them to formulate a plan of attack. To quote John Belushi, "But Noooooooo!" Boot to the door, damn the consequences! Thus the inspiration for today's strip. I should start rigging magical incendiary devices to all the doors in my adventures. :)

Have a good day, folks!

  1. Or pull a sneaky, like when I had you guys creep into a dragons lair, step on the tail of a cat, then REALLY annoy the dragon for killing his feline familiar… 😉

  2. im going to recomend having a giant clumb of semisentient green (or color of your choice) ooze behind the door to totaly engulf the person who opens the door, and if its attacked, the engulfee takes damage too 3:)

  3. The first 18-strength fighter I ever associated with eventually developed a sense of regret for all the damage he’d done to harmless doors, and devoted himself to a quest to repair them all regardless of the cost or monsters that had re-inhabited those rooms.

At the time this struck me as odd but today it makes plenty of sense. I don’t know what that says about me 😉

  4. Ever heard of the monster door? Its a kind of mimic, but instead of chest, it copies door. And otfen they are only covering the wall. So not only they got attacked by a monster while attempting to pass through a door, but there is nothing behind it. In the end they will learn that breaking through a door isn’t always the solution.

  5. Best one I ever ran into – our GM rigged it so that the doorframe was the foundation of the entire dungeon. Our blundering, blithering fighter kicked the door in…rocks fell, everyone died. That was kind of our DM’s thing, too. Someone finally push him too far? Rocks fall. We were in the middle of a giant plain, no mountains for thousands of miles in any directions, and our monk had a wish. He asked for the wish in such an incredibly moronic fashion that – you guessed it – rocks fell, everyone died.

In retrospect, we probably shouldn’t have played drunk so much.

  6. @Grimlock13: This happened once in a sci-fi game I run–they were in a dungeon, and a malignant robotic door (with tentacles) engulfed one of my PCs. He took damage with every hit dealt to the “door”–by the STR64 fighter! (+49 damage per hit)
