463 – He has +5 to Blundering

A while back I had mentioned that I wanted to change up how I drew the strip. Today's strip is the next step in the evolution of MeatShield. From this point forward, I will be drawing the strips in this format. The way I figure it, with my current productivity being what it is, if I'm only going to produce one or two strips a week (for now), this format will let me give you guys more story and, hopefully, enable me to grow as an artist. I know that a number of fantasy related comics such as Looking for Group and Table Titans have already embraced this kind of format. I'm a little late to the party. :) Let me know what you think.

Also, the strip will be on a brief hiatus over the latter half of December and early January, as I will be be making my biennial voyage from Southern California to Northern Texas for Christmas and New Year's with my in-laws. The last comic strip for 2013 will go up on December 18. The comic strip will resume on January 14th, 2014.

Take care,

~Rob

  1. Ah, the fire breath door open… Something like that happened to my first edition group, when the rest of the party (I wasn’t there that day) opened a door to find a five headed fire hydra, which used its five breath weapons to instantly kill everyone but the cleric who was fortunately able to make his escape with the remains for resurrections.

Also, is the gargoyle head a Tomb of Horrors reference?

  2. So we now know how Dhur works out.
I am in central Texas, the weather is in constant flux here this time of year, bring a warm coat. You’re going to need it.

    1. @Mike Lewis: Oh, believe me, I’m familiar with North Texas in winter. I used to live in Irving (Las Colinas) and my in-laws live waaaaaay north of Denton, almost up by the Red River.

  3. Tomb of Horrors in 1978, playing it the first time 2 of us out of 6 survived, running it as a GM first time TPK (Total Party Kill). I didn’t know to laugh or cry as they “teleported” one by one at the “Absolute Darkness” Mouth.

  4. Far as Dhur knows that is standard equipment in a Dungeon,…. traps are things like a loop of rope on the floor and such,….. those fire doors and such are part of the Dungeon,…..

  5. I love the Tomb of Horrors references . I ran my group through that…. twice. They still haven’t forgiven me. One guy’s character got introduced as a prisoner in there, walked to the next room over with the party, and promptly died under a falling curtain of green slime. Fastest D&D death, from introduction to demise, that we’d ever seen.

Also, that demi-lich can cause a party wipe all by itself.

Nobody fell for the door in the demon’s mouth, though 🙁
