Sentient weapons can be scary. Who wants to have one thats more intelligent than the user?

Actually we had a successful occurrence of that in one of our old games,….. we had a guy who played with us only occasionally so he made a truly stupid Barbarian for to play [made it easier for us to have him as an “automatron” when the guy was not playing] who spoke little if at all, had to have people tell him it was time to eat or time to sleep, etc. Well, one day the guy tells us his work schedule has changed and he will be able to game each week with us,..great so the following week he shows up and same with the week after and the week after,..and promptly gets real bored of playing an idiot. DM is at a loss,…. player is at a loss,….I [playing the War Wizard] had just gotten rid of a sentient dagger that annoyed me to no end so I came up with the idea of having the Barbarian find a sentient weapon that had been wielded by some great ancestor of his clan,…it would have the correct mindset of a Barbarian, be of the Barbarians allignment, and could “talk to him” effectively raising the character’s intelligence without the characters INT actually going up. Long story short the weapon [a Claymore] was just intelligent enough to turn the Barbarian from a “lump of flesh with a sword” to a “lacking in book learning but having common sense” Barbarian,..that and the guy loved playing the Mongo [Blazing Saddles anyone] type character while still being able to decide what his character does because he controls both the character and the Claymore.

I see now how that can work. It’s also a great soloution to keep players from getting bored. Was this sword able to teach combat techniques to it’s user like the spear from R.A Salvator’s book “The Woods Out Back”? I guess sentient weapons are almost like A.I’s in Sci-Fi. Useful, but need someone to physicaly move them.

It was more of a sage advice type of thing,… kind of like Obi Wan at the end of Star Wars with the “use the force Luke”,….

As I recall, the spear only gave advise after he made a poor tactical choice… like shield bashing a troll, or trying to fight with the spear and shield. Never really offered anything up front.
