Okay, I need a little hairstyling advice. Jaine is, in my mind, due for a hairstyle change and I need suggestions. I'd like to keep the ponytail because, like a lot of guys, I'm a sucker for ponytails, but I'm not married to it. Essentially, if you were were a female adventurer tromping around the world of Ardris and needed a hairstyle that was easy to take care of but still looked good, what would it be? Let me know in the comments below. Thanks!
Take care,
~Rob

Y’know what? I believe him.
Bluehand, called it! Anyway, for hair styles you can go for a braid or perhaps a military style bun. Throw in some enchanted hair pins and your all set. Not sure what kinds of enchantments someone would put on those, but enchanters are probably a touch crazy after awhile.
How about a combo? Ever seen where most of the hair in the back fell loose, but there was also a ponytail or braid in the back?
Obviously, in a fight, long hair is a disadvantage. Get her a pixie cut.
A braid works. It can be a braided ponytail, or a french braid, or two along the temples, joining to one at the nape of the neck. So too does a headband. It can go around the hatband line (ie, just above the ears); it can also go from base of skull to crown, just behind the ears. She could also take to wearing a hat. A broad-brimmed leather or felt hat has the advantage of keeping the rain out of your eyes and ears, and keeps your face and neck from getting sunburned. A loose beret can certainly keep all of her hair up.
Speaking as a woman who also spends a good deal of time dancing, working out, and gardening, if you have long but not super-long hair, a pony tail is really the no-fuss, no muss way to go. French braids are pretty, but they take a little while to do (and if you’re trying to pull things really tight, your arms ache from being over your head awhile). I’ve done buns and French twists, but pins and hair sticks fall out at the most inconvenient times and I can attest that if you use a lot of pins and twist the hair really tightly, your scalp can get very, very sore. You have to let the hair down at night or all that stress will start to remove your hair from the roots.
The other choice is cutting it shorter and using a hair band to keep it off the face. Mine now is a long bob just touching my shoulders; I can scrape it back in a ponytail if I really need no, but most of the time I just use a hairband and let it go.
A large-brimmed hat for keeping the sun off is fine, but hats are very inadequate as a way to keep hair in place, especially if the hair is slippery and fine.
If Jaine wants practicality and style, give her a chin-length bob.
One other choice – a snood, a type of mesh bag for the hair. Again, has to be pinned in place or attached to a headband that is pinned in place. They were last popular as everyday wear in the 1940s and can look very fussy. Snood-type scarf wrapping can be seen on some Jewish women (ones from Conservative backgrounds; they call it the tichel if you want to Google it) and in some Islamic hijab.
I actually think the scarf wrapping is very pretty, but the times I have done it (as part of a bellydance costume), after awhile my head started to overheat and I have to wrap the scarf so tightly, I get headaches.
There you go, guys, more than you ever wanted to know about hairstyle considerations, LOL.
Perhaps one of the lesser-known properties of The Verdant Mantle is a Pocket Of Endless Hairties. Those things are always getting lost!
I agree with everybody’s assessments. As a woman with long hair, a pony tail is the best, although I am a big fan of a bun wrapped with a Scrunchi. That might be difficult to come by in this world though. LOL! Braids are also good.
Blue hand for the win.(except when he goes to the mountain.)
Speaking from personal experience with long hair, I’d say a braid tied at the top and the bottom. It saves a lot of time combing or brushing out tangles.
Short hair is the other practical option, though that can involve spending time in the morning convincing it that it doesn’t need to stick up and out in all directions. Tricky without a mirror on hand, and most mirrors don’t like adventuring all that much, what with all the opportunities for breakage.
Theres also the rope braid, which I believe was touched on above, but is essentially a ponytail braided feom the band, down, and a variant, the ribbon braid (also called a thong braid), which uses a long ribbon or thong to “band” the base of the pony tail, then using the rest of the length as one of the 3 “strands” of the braid. Can be used to finish the braid, then the braid can be doubled up, tail to base, as needed.
