568 – I guess we just got lucky!

Apologies to John Kovalic. πŸ™‚

Y’see, there is no Wand of Wonder in the world of Ardris, but we do have the W’Shaa Abelskiver of Cosmic Chance (the recipe’s full name in the W’Shaa Cookbook of Light)!

Take care,

~Rob

Transcripts

PANEL ONE
MOH (looking perplexed): Apparently, the poison we put in the batter didn’t affect him.
JAINE: Okay, but why’d he shrink?
CH’P: W’Shaa Abelskiver causes random magical effects when eaten, both good and bad.

PANEL TWO
CH’P (holding a shrunken Gelidek by the throat): It could have done anything from granting him cosmic power to turning him into a cuttlefish.
JAINE (off-camera): Why didn’t it affect you when you ate some?

PANEL THREE
(exterior shot of ice castle)
CH’P: I’ve eaten abelskiver before; it only works on you once.
JAINE: What happened when you ate it back then?
CH’P: … I don’t want to talk about it.

PANEL FOUR
(interior of W’Shaa monastery)
CAPTION: Roughly nine years earlier…
CH’P (transmogrified into Carson the Muskrat from Dork Tower): This can be reversed, right?!

Um. So, about that poison. Just how big a dose did Ch’p get? Is it now a race against time to get him the antidote? Did he take some in advance (off-panel, as it were) in anticipation of Gelidek ‘volunteering’ him as food-taster?

Is he doomed to die slowly and painfully? Will Jaq have some more agreeable company for all eternity?

*So* many questions!

@AndyW: We’ll see just how Stout Ch’p is, won’t we? See what I did there? πŸ™‚

In comic 566 (just last week), didn’t Gelidek say he had Abelskiver before? If it only affects you once, why did it affect Gelidek this time?

Rob on February 16, 2016 @ 7:52 pm

@Jeff: You are absolutely right. Gelidek did indeed say that. I completely forgot. Let’s say that he had eaten it before, but not prepared for him in the W’Shaa manner?
Dang.
This one’s on me, folks. Jeff, I’ve already sent you an email with a MeatShield No-Prize attached. Thanks for your help! πŸ™‚

Hrrrmn. If it can be reversed and/or is temporary, that implies that Gelidak might not be small forever. Something for the group to consider…

Also: It only works once on halflings. Maybe it works differently on dragons?

@ Rob,
Eh, you’d also stipulated that wyrms operate at a maturity level of the sort 15 year olds would be ashamed to have so it’s possible Gelidak was bragging to look cool. It’s also possible that he genuinely thought that he had the stuff before but was mistaken or deceived. (When someone who has both that temperament and that power makes a mistake of that sort who’s going to tell them that they were wrong? ^_^;).
