Still in the low 30s here but I think this is a reference to the cartoon Grape Ape. I caught a few episodes in reruns when I was a kid but don’t remember it well.

Heh, 49 here and I never heard of it. I don’t think it ever really registered in the UK.

@AndyW: Actually, according to Wikipedia (which is 100% accurate because the internet is never wrong;), The Great Grape Ape did air on the BBC in 1977-78 along with some piece of crap called Bailey’s Comets, which was about a rollerskating team? Because, you know, those were really common back in the late ’70s. Just rollerskating teams racing around the globe as far as the eye could see…

@Jeremy Archibald: Strangely, I never liked that cartoon. I think it had something to do with the way Speed Buggy talked; that weird sort of ratcheting sound. So, big purple apes, yes – talking dunebuggies, not so much. 🙂
