As far as the icon goes, head on over to Gravatar.com and you can pick out a globally recognized avatar (“gravatar”) and you’ll be off to the races. It’ll show up any time you post a comment on any blog or forum. Let me know if you have any problems.

holdon, looking at that last sentence tells me that you’re not only going to need a dictionary handy, but a grammar guide as well. Trust me, I’m a fanfiction writer and also a sprite comic writer. People leave better critiques when they can not only read, but understand what you have written, since clearly written words that are organized grammatically make sense to them.

Gentlemen, please. I don’t want a flame war to start here over something as trivial as spelling errors. It’s really not that big of a deal. 🙂

Hate to say it, as it may be throwing fuel on the fire, but there are times when spelling, mechanics and grammar *do* count. There’s a difference between helping your Uncle Jack off a horse and helping your uncle jack off a horse. And if you’re going to identify yourself as a “righter” people won’t take you seriously, although they’d likely be more forgiving if you were the artist.

That said, I don’t think Strykor was trying to flame. It felt, to me, like constructive criticism intending to help holden.

@auth mal: You’re probably right as far as the flaming goes. Maybe I’m a little overly wary about that. Speaking as a former proofreader, I agree about the importance of spelling and grammar. I just didn’t think at the time that it was worth getting people all riled up, possibly ruining the congeniality that the comments sections on this site have had going for them. Again, maybe I’m too wary about that. 🙂

My ability to cut through a bit of prose and find errors that many people don’t even notice caused an English Lit prof to try to convince me to become an English major. Well, that and some other things I did.

If I were actually trying to flame (or being asked to proof the entries), I’d point out the 3, 5, and 6 issues, respectively in his/her (not sure of holden’s gender) posts, but I have no desire to simply flame someone today.

Being this is your site, Rob, if you didn’t worry about the amicable nature of the comments, I’d worry about your passion for your site.

That said, holden? I have one last piece of advice for you today: spellcheck is *not* your friend. It may tell you that something is spelled correctly, but it won’t tell you if it’s the right word (there, their, and they’re are prime examples) and, in the case of the ones that also check grammar, aren’t always correct for what you’re trying to write. A trick I was taught was to read things backwards, because it forces your brain to parse things out individually instead of starting to read a sentence and then “filling in the blanks” because you know what you’re trying to say. That’ll improve the quality of your writing, and will help you maintain better readership levels. Look at Rob’s work as an example of what good attention to detail nets you. Some phrases are *not* always grammatically correct, but they’re always *right* for what he’s doing, and we all enjoy it enough to keep coming back for more.
